The Brief · Issue 009 · 30 Oct 2026
Who originated the fight? Both partners, apparently
The final October briefing: disputed credit, obedient avatars and a £12 spending limit.
Good morning,
As October closes, the profession can report another productive week of solving the wrong problem with a policy, a dashboard or a man who has never existed.
Pemberton Rook's retreat reaches the incident-report phase
After partners failed to build a tower because they could not divide origination credit, two participants in a physical altercation now claim to have started it. The events manager who restored order does not have equity, and therefore does not feature in the leadership success narrative.
The wrong kind of client service
A transaction at Pemberton Rook is progressing too efficiently. The client has been asked to stop supplying documents and accurate answers quite so quickly, in the interests of protecting the legal team's budget.
Law, technology and authority
Nineteen lawyers had been accused of AI hallucinations by Tuesday; then there was an update. At Wetherby Dodd, the managing partner will accept advice only from Graham, an AI adviser trained on fourteen years of the managing partner's own speeches. Meanwhile, Bellwether Voss granted an AI agent vast settlement authority but would not allow it to spend £14.
In the List dispute
We visit Strake Pell, where discretion has been perfected to the point that the firm's client experience cannot be discussed with prospective clients.
These are fictional stories. The behaviour may strike readers as familiar.
