The Unbillable's annual compensation survey has reached its traditional conclusion: pay has risen across the legal profession, particularly among the people responsible for announcing it.

This year's invented respondents also reveal the increasing complexity of what firms now call compensation. Cash remains popular, but it is being supplemented by AI tokens, training credits, deferred visibility, protected origination and the right to be addressed as strategic.

One respondent reported earning 900 Collaboration Points, redeemable for a discussion about whether her work qualified for collaboration. Another received a substantial Innovation Uplift contingent on innovation not reducing her hours.

Firms have begun benchmarking Profit per Recognised Human, a denominator adjusted to exclude lawyers categorised as “future talent” and non-human workers classified as capacity. A separate metric, Revenue per Partner Appearing in the Press Release, is proving attractive to merger advisers.

Bletchley Frost reported especially strong growth in ceremonial recognition. Its 340 AI agents are excluded from payroll but included in the culture report, while human associates continue to ask whether praise can offset rent.

At Bellwether Voss, internal AI-learning credits now carry a notional value. Partners can accumulate them without attending training, provided they own the allocation rights. The firm insists these awards represent professional development rather than a new currency, because nobody outside the firm accepts them.

The survey's headline result is nevertheless positive. Total compensation is up in every category under which a firm chose to report it. Respondents expressed confidence that reward systems remain competitive, evidence for which is the continuing willingness of employees to work there.

The detailed methodology will be published when the Rankings Desk receives confirmation of which definitions make the findings look best.
