Alderwick March has been reclassified as mid law after slipping from tenth to eleventh in the NA10 rankings, despite retaining 4,800 lawyers and every office it possessed yesterday.

The change took effect at midnight. By morning, the firm's globally integrated platform had become a useful regional network, and its market-leading partners were being described as approachable.

One corporate lawyer discovered that a transaction she completed on Thursday was now a “strong result for a firm of that size”.

The firm has appealed, pointing out that it operates in thirty-seven countries and earns several billion dollars a year.

The Rankings Desk confirmed that this was very impressive for mid law.

Clients have been contacted individually to establish whether they are comfortable receiving the same advice from less important people. Several asked whether it would be cheaper.

It will not.

Alderwick March's management has commissioned an immediate strategic review. Early proposals include a merger, an acquisition and an inquiry into whether the firm in tenth place has counted its people correctly.

A fourth proposal, expanding the NA10 to eleven, was rejected by the NA10.

The firm's managing partner said he respected the integrity of the rankings and looked forward to questioning it extensively until next year.
