Partners Send Avatars to Retreat on the Importance of Being Present

Pemberton Rook's leadership team has embraced presence as a concept that need not involve attendance.

At least seven partners at Pemberton Rook's troubled leadership retreat are alleged to have sent AI avatars to a compulsory session on authentic human connection, according to attendance records obtained by The Unbillable.

The session, Showing Up as Your Whole Self, was intended to restore trust among the firm's most senior lawyers. It began with the instruction to close laptops and end parallel meetings. At that point four participants froze, two continued nodding at a constant rate and one repeated, “That's a very important reflection, James,” although nobody called James was speaking.

The facilitator initially congratulated the group on its stillness.

Investigators later compared the hotel-room allocations with the session's attendance log and found several partners had apparently participated from locations that included an airport lounge, an international conference and one partner's own office. One delegate was represented by two different avatars in consecutive sessions. Both claimed full participation credit.

Extract from the audit trail

09:02 — Partner avatar joins discussion on trust.

09:11 — Avatar says “I completely agree” before a question has been asked.

09:27 — Facilitator asks attendees to share an occasion when they felt vulnerable.

09:28 — Three avatars cite a difficult quarter for margins.

09:44 — Attendance team marks all participants “fully present”.

One partner defended the arrangement as a practical demonstration of the firm's commitment to AI-enabled delivery. “If we're serious about efficiency, we should not insist the most expensive people in the organisation personally attend everything,” he said.

A human participant asked whether that principle might be extended to client matters. The partner said a retreat was different, because it involved leadership.

The firm's events team says the booking terms did not prohibit digital delegates. The retreat's brochure, however, promised unmediated human connection, a phrase management now says was aspirational rather than a minimum service level.

The investigation follows disclosures about a five-star hotel criticised for being part of a chain and the incident in which Felix Dacre's AI accurately published his conversation with a non-speaking balance sheet.

Pemberton Rook has ordered a review of avatar verification. Its preliminary recommendation is to require each avatar to complete a declaration that its underlying partner would have attended if circumstances permitted.

Two partners have appealed, arguing that their avatars were substantially more engaged than they would have been.

Something worth not billing for.
