Solo Atlantic Rower Paid to Explain Teamwork to Partnership That Cannot Agree on Lunch
A Pemberton Rook retreat speaker crossed an ocean alone and was then asked how he would have handled the firm's executive committee.

Pemberton Rook hired a celebrated solo Atlantic rower to deliver its partner-retreat keynote on teamwork, according to a newly leaked programme which lists the session as The Power of Rowing Together.
The speaker spent 71 days crossing the ocean without another person in the boat. Partners apparently considered this an exemplary model of collective endeavour, particularly the part where there were no colleagues to consult.
“True teamwork begins with absolute ownership,” the speaker told the room. “When I was in danger, I could depend on only one person.”
A senior partner reportedly replied that this sounded attractive but would create unacceptable concentration of origination credit.

The speaker's lessons included preparing for difficult conditions, acknowledging limitations and agreeing priorities before setting off. Attendees queried why the firm had paid an external expert to explain behaviours that were not part of its compensation model.
By the afternoon the presentation had become a dispute about whether a solo athlete was qualified to advise a partnership. One delegate argued the rower's achievement was fundamentally individualistic; another said the achievement deserved recognition only if the rower could prove who originated the Atlantic.
The session took place during a retreat already under scrutiny after a partner's psychedelic LinkedIn incident, complaints about a five-star chain hotel and evidence that several partners sent avatars to a seminar about being present.
The events team has confirmed that the speaker received his full fee. A request to substitute a reduced teamwork rate was declined.
The rower said that during his journey the hardest moments had involved the weather and the sea. On hearing that the partnership had spent 46 minutes deciding where to eat lunch, he amended the answer to include governance.
